Storm Watch: 13th Edition

The Carleton Place Cyclones welcomed the Kemptville Storm this afternoon for their last regular season game before the Christmas break. The Cyclones were riding an 11 game unbeaten streak going into Sunday's game, hoping to complete the "Twelve Undefeated Games of Christmas".  The message in the pre-game speech was simple, "everyone needs to contribute.  Everyone!"  Last time these two teams met it ended in a 2-2 draw.  Would the message get through?  Could the Cyclones put together three strong periods of hockey?  The answer to these questions was a resounding, "YES"!  In fact, our local gameclock expert, Tony Brown, completely ran out of room on his scorecard during this tremendous outing.

Clara Salter got on the board first with a perfect snipe from the frying pan.  The opportunity came off a beautiful pass from linemate, Katie Chase with Sophia Brown picking up the other helper.  Ava McGarry scored less than a minute later on a buried rebound from the side of the net.  The Cyclones were hungry.  Penalty trouble would allow the Storm to creep back into the game with a powerplay goal, but the Cyclones stayed the course.  The message between periods was, "change nothing- keep pouring it on!"

Daria Sullivan would bury one early in the second period to restore the two goal lead.  It is reported that she deked through everyone on the Kemptville team twice before finding the back of the net. Chloee Carmody got the helper.  Nearing the end of the second period, Ava McGarry found the back of the net again from the exact same spot as her first goal.  Shae Chalmers recorded the assist.  Moments later, Ella Anderson would fire a laser beam to the far corner of the net for the Cyclones fifth goal of the game.  Both Chloee Carmody and Daria Sullivan got the assists on the full line effort goal.  The Storm would add one more goal before the end of the period, but the Cyclones went into the third with a commanding 5-2 lead.

Daria Sullivan would snipe an early goal in the third, assisted by Ella Anderson and Lila Faris.  This would mark Sullivan's third point of the game.  The Storm would respond with a quick one soon after, but that would be it for the Kemptville offence.  Netminder, Piper Nicholson, closed the door.  Defense kept the Storm to the outside for the remainder as well.  Mila Straznicky looked like she was putting on an angling clinic for most of the game. Speedster, Lila Faris, would battle for a breakaway and make no mistake beating the Kemtpville goalie while fighting off a defender.  And finally, Clara Salter would pay Katie Chase back for her beautiful first period pass to allow Katie to net the last goal of the game.  That's right hockey fans, the Cyclones posted an 8-3 victory over the Kemptville Storm.  They played a complete three periods and managed to break the curse of Sunday afternoon games.

And so, CP Cyclones fans can dream tonight of Christmas trees and Santa Clause, knowing that the girls delivered in a most epic fashion.  For those keeping track, the Cyclones have not lost a game since November 3rd.  Oh, this reporter cannot wait to see what the new year brings.
